As a kid, the number 20 was always of special significance to me. I always wanted to be 20 years old. In school in my country of birth, the highest grade you could get was -- and still is -- 20. If a person was very good at something, others would say they were a 20 (out of 20) in their job.

I don't remember how I felt when I turned 20. I might have not even noticed it when I did. The 20s I got in school are history now. And I don't recall how many times my work has been considered a 20 out of 20. But there is one 20 that matters to me in a particular way: the 20th year I've been doing this job almost every day.

Over the last two decades I have translated millions of words and interpreted for hundreds of hours. Most often I did a good job but I screwed up too. Without the trust of my clients, I wouldn't have the opportunity to learn, to make mistakes, and to grow.
